34,898 homeless people in Orange County, the 3rd highest in the Nation

I would never have guessed that Orange County would have the 3rd highest population of homeless people in the nation (behind Los Angeles and New York City). This just amazes me! Orange County is one of the wealthiest counties in the United States yet has the 3rd highest number of homeless people!
The Someone Cares Soup Kitchen does a survey of their population each year. In the last survey I found two questions very intriguing...

1. Where did you sleep last night?
  • Cars/Truck/Van 17%
  • Friends  10%
  • Motel 6%
  • Residence 31%
  • Shelter 4%
  • Street 32%
2. How would you have eaten if not for the Soup Kitchen?
  • Church 1%
  • Don't Know 12%
  • Dumpster 6%
  • Friends 10%
  • Pan Handle 5%
  • Buy food 14%
  • Salvation Army 3%
  • Shelter 5%
  • SOS (food charity) 10%
  • Work odd jobs for food 3%
  • Would not have eaten 31%
Makes you wonder what would happen if the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen did not exist!
