34,898 homeless people in Orange County, the 3rd highest in the Nation

I would never have guessed that Orange County would have the 3rd highest population of homeless people in the nation (behind Los Angeles and New York City). This just amazes me! Orange County is one of the wealthiest counties in the United States yet has the 3rd highest number of homeless people!
The Someone Cares Soup Kitchen does a survey of their population each year. In the last survey I found two questions very intriguing...

1. Where did you sleep last night?
  • Cars/Truck/Van 17%
  • Friends  10%
  • Motel 6%
  • Residence 31%
  • Shelter 4%
  • Street 32%
2. How would you have eaten if not for the Soup Kitchen?
  • Church 1%
  • Don't Know 12%
  • Dumpster 6%
  • Friends 10%
  • Pan Handle 5%
  • Buy food 14%
  • Salvation Army 3%
  • Shelter 5%
  • SOS (food charity) 10%
  • Work odd jobs for food 3%
  • Would not have eaten 31%
Makes you wonder what would happen if the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen did not exist!

Ever Wonder where the Soup Kitchen gets all of their Food Donated from?

There are so many amazing companies that provide food daily to the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen! Many of the companies that you frequent weekly and don't even realize how much they give back to the community and how giving they are to the Soup Kitchen. One of the biggest donors of food is Trader Joe's in Costa Mesa and Huntington Beach. If it was not for Trader Joe's it would be very difficult for the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen to operate on the shoestring budget that it does. Several other large grocery stores that give so generously are the Irvine Ranch Market and Albertson's. In addition, Hoag Hospital also provides an enormous amount of food each week.
There are many other companies that provide food, they include... El Ranchito, KFC, Pizza Hut, Starbucks, Sprinkles, Marie Callender's, Peet's Coffee, Costco, VA Hospital, Newport Harbor High School, Yum Yum Donuts, Zinc Cafe, Susie Cake, Pain Du Monde, Entenmanns, Five Sweets and many, many more!
Someone Cares also receives food from local can drives as well as individuals that bring by food/cans wanting to give back

Someone Cares Soup Kitchen was selected as Best Charity by OC Weekly

OC Weekly named Someone Cares Soup Kitchen as Best Charity of 2010 for Orange County! Just a testimony to the amazing work that Someone Cares does for the Homeless and Hungry!

I want you to meet some of the Someone Cares volunteers, staff and most of all guests!

Someone Cares Soup Kitchen serves a hot, nutritious meal to more than 400 guests a day. To see it in action is nothing short of amazing!

I want to introduce you to a few of Someone Cares volunteers, staff and most of all the guests. Over the next three weeks we will be shooting live video so that you can meet the guests at the Someone Cares Soup Kitchen and learn more about them and how they found themselves in such a very difficult place in their  life (usually a place that they never thought they would find themselves in). You will also hear about how thankful they are to receive a hot, nutritious meal and also all the unconditional love and support they receive.

Please take a moment and watch this heartfelt kickoff video so that you are able to better understand the Soup Kitchen...
